Waste water treatment plants (WWTP)

The European Union has about 50.000 municipal and industrial waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) whose waste water treatment technologies tend to have a very negative environmental impact and generate a lot of greenhouse gases (GHGs). WWTPs use a lot of energy to clean water and generate over 11 million tonnes of sewage sludge waste, a by-product of the chemical, mechanical and biological waste water treatment and cleaning process. As sewage sludge tends to concentrate heavy metals and poorly biodegradable trace organic compounds as well as potentially pathogenic organisms present in waste waters, EU and national regulations ban the use of untreated sludge. However, the current main disposal routes (landfilling, incineration, agriculture, composting) across Europe are causing a big environmental problem. . The ECO-BIS project offers a new solution which is not yet on the market.

Its two main aims are to make the waste water cleaning processes of industrial and municipal WWTPs more ecological and efficient and to recycle sewage sludge waste into a high value added resource
